J. Cole San Diego Concert reviews
Drums, bodily fluids, and factoids
This show was diverting but I like Chekhov and Shakespeare. The audience mean was 18-19 and I am 55+. I was intrigued more than entertained and it seemed to be well loved. We spent the first 10 minutes building 'community' reading out loud from a teleprompter. We thanked, hugged, and supported several putative audience members in a real ebony and ivory John Lennon Imagine moment. The opening drums were fun. (We drummed in my men's group for ten years and it's very relaxing.) The factoids were very earnest suggesting that our youth spend too much time in virtual reality rather than the real thing. The kids were amused with the irony but I don't think the show really took the idea anywhere. The whole concept of "foreign" J. Cole men that are human in many ways is a good one and undoubtedly contributes to their 15+ years of success. The show is FUN and the preachiness is not heavy handed. If you go to the opera the talent can sing--in this show the talent can catch marshmallows in their mouth when thrown from 20 feet. Audience participation is overdone--silly really- they grab a guy put him in a suit and coat him with paint-they use an audience member to share a meal of Twinkies that's funny like a food fight is funny. I'm not a big fan of audience participation and so didn't dance in the aisles at Mama Mia. I sorta expect the talent to entertain rather than suggest the audience should cut loose and have a good time. I probably should get out more. I had a good time and my kid loved it. I wouldn't go again even with a deeply discounted ticket but if the local high school got the rights, I'd go again to see what they could make of it.
